The predecessor of the university was China's first independent National Normal College founded in 1938. At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the National Normal College was merged into Hunan University. In August 1953, the national colleges and departments were adjusted, and Hunan University was abolished and Hunan Normal College was established. In 1984, the university was renamed Hunan Normal University.
