University Ranking VS Professional Ranking

There are 3 dominant ranking standards when measuring a university, Quacquerelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS), Times Higher Education(THE) and The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)

1. Quacquerelli Symonds World University Rankings, short for QS, is an annual university ranking based on data covering four key areas of concern for students: research, employability, teaching and internationalization.

The research currently considers over 2000 universities and ranks over 700, The top 400 are ranked individually while those that placed 401 and over are ranked in groups.

The rankings are compiled using the following six indicators:

Academic reputation (40%) – Academics are asked to identify the universities that are currently producing the best research in their field of expertise.

Employer reputation (10%) –Employers are asked to identify the universities that produce the best graduates.

Faculty /student ratio (20%) - Faculty /student ratio measures the number of academic staff employed for every student admitted.

Citations per faculty (20%)- Counts the number of times research papers associated with a specific university has been cited in other publications.

International faculty ratio (5%) and international student ratio (5%) – Evaluates the proportion of international students and international faculty.

How to choose a university or a major

In order to choose a university and a major, four aspects have to be taken into consideration.

Firstly, concerning the choice of a major. In China, each university offers more than 40 majors, but only a few majors are open to foreign students. If you value specialization, then you should strive for specialization,

Secondly, concerning the financial aspect, you can choose to apply for available scholarships. Applications for these scholarships are pretty easy and many benefits are attached to them, such as The very little amount of money required to pay for a 3-years college program(graduate program), exemption from tuition fees for 3 years, exemption from dormitory fees within the period of 3 years. Concerning the 4 years undergraduate program, scholarships offer a 4-years tuition fee, dormitory and other fees waiver. You should start by deciding if you want to take a graduate program or an undergraduate program, followed by the choice of the university and eventually the choice of a major.

Thirdly, concerning the quality and the standard of universities as well as universities’ locations, in China, universities are located in economically developed provinces and cities. Furthermore, China offers better living conditions to students and for students who would like to stay in China after graduation, employment opportunities are also available. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the cost of living is relatively higher in cities such as: Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, etc.

Fourthly, concerning the field of liberal arts sciences, it is good to take note of the fact that this field is sub-divided into two broad categories, which are: Science and Engineering and Liberal Arts. In China, the science and engineering majors, especially science and technology majors, are held in high esteem by the government, enterprises and universities. Graduates from these majors easily find jobs and receive higher wages. There are scholarships available for Masters, PhD mainly in the field of science and engineering.

QS World University Rankings 2020

In the most recent QS World University Rankings® 2020 that issued in Jun., 2019, 2 of the top universities in mainland China achieved their highest rankings. Tsinghua university is ranked 16th in the QS world university rankings 2020 for its improving academic performance, while Peking University has risen from 30th to 22nd. Chinese academic research now rivals that of the United States.

The ranking is compiled by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a global higher education research company. There are 1,000 world universities on the list. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues to hold first place in the QS rankings for a record-breaking eighth consecutive year, while the overall picture for US universities is concerning. Of the 157 universities from the United States to be included this year, 117 of them have fallen in rank since last year.

Overall, Chinese universities are continuing to perform well and are increasingly receiving high scores for their research impact. Eight of the world's top 100 universities for research impact are now Chinese, up from five last year. Among the 42 universities in mainland China that participated in the rankings, 32 of them have higher QS citations than last year.

QS use six indicators to compile the ranking
  • Academic Reputation: based on survey responses from over 94,000 academics;
  • Employer Reputation: based on survey responses from over 44,000 employers about the relationship between institution and graduate employability;
  • Citations per Faculty: measuring research impact, it divides the total number of citations received by a university's research papers over a five-year period by the number of faculty at an institution;
  • Faculty/Student Ratio: a proxy for teaching capacity. Student numbers are divided by faculty numbers, giving the global student body some indication of likely class sizes at their selected institution;
  • International Faculty Ratio: one of QS's two measures of internationalization, it measures the proportion of non-domestic faculty at an institution;
  • International Student Ratio: the second of QS's two measures of internationalization, it measures the proportion of non-domestic students at an institution. This, in turn, provides an indication of a university's ability to attract talent from across the world.
  • Jul. 2019, ESI Data
